We are sorry but we are not taking on any more paid research for the moment due to the current volume of enquiries received.
If you don’t feel that you have the inclination, time or expertise to trace your family tree yourself, we can also offer a professional service which can either get you started , or perhaps “knock down some of those brick walls” for you.
You need to show caution when hiring a professional researcher. You can find that the cost quickly mounts up with you not always getting a great deal of information back in return. One of the biggest problems is that most genealogists charge by the hour, which on the face of it isn’t at all unreasonable-but the problem is that they can spend many hours genuinely searching on your behalf, but may not necessarily find what you are looking for. Unfortunately that is one of the occupational hazards.
What we would suggest if you decide you need a little professional help, is that we conduct some initial research, for which the charge is only £15.00. This may well be all you need to spend to get you started with your research. There is no requirement either to pay in advance. What we would ask from you is that you let us know what you want to achieve, and what or who you are specifically looking for. Tell us what you already know as well. Once we have this information we will conduct an analysis of what we have found, plus what can reasonably be achieved.
What do I get for my money ?
There is no easy answer to this unfortunately, and each case is different. Because of the uncertainly of what can be achieved, and the possible complexity of future research, we have set the initial charge as low as possible. You are not going to get a family tree produced for you which takes you back to Royalty or William the Conqueror, and let’s be quite honest, you are not going to get one of our professional researchers to work for too many hours for just £15.00. Realistically, they will limit initial research to no more than three hours research. We still think that for £15.00 it’s a bargain and offers exceptional value for money.
What we will do, based on the information you supply, is let you know you what information is publically available, and this would include census details (which could reveal additional family members, address, occupation etc), military records, or birth, marriage and death records from the National Archives. It’s difficult to be specific, but if you click here, you will see a screen shot of an actual report provided by us on what can be achieved for just £15.00. If you are unable to read it, just contact us, and we'll send you an Excel file showing the same details.
This hasn’t specifically been selected to shows to us in a favourable light, it just reflects what is possible to achieve. Some initial research could reveal more, and others a lot less. Unfortunately until you try, you don’t really know in advance what you are going to get.
For birth, marriage and death records we will quote the relevant reference to enable a copy to be purchased from the National Archives. If you are going to purchase anything, please double check the reference before ordering, as we can’t take any responsibility for any errors. It’s only by purchasing these certificates can you find out and confirm the actual birth date, and usually the parents in a birth certificate, or the spouse, date of marriage, and possibly the father of the bride and groom on a marriage certificate. You can either order copies yourself from the National Archives, or we are happy to do this on your behalf. Please note however that it’s cheaper to order certificates yourself. It’s only fair to point out that our fees do include a mark up to cover our administration charges and to cover a percentage of the fee that PayPal and the host Website provider both charge us. You will find however that our rates are still very competitive when compared with charges other genealogists make for the same service.
Is it possible you could find nothing out ?
Yes it is. There is sadly no “magic button” that can be pressed that reveals all the answers. The research process can be quite time consuming, and it’s possible to search for something for many hours without finding what you are looking for. If we are unable to find anything at all, we are happy to reduce the initial research fee from £15.00 to £9.99. We think that’s only fair. If we can’t find anything in our initial research, we will try to offer suggestions as to what alternate steps you can take. We will of course let you know what records we have searched.
What else can you offer ?
In some cases we are able to provide a census copy showing your relatives. This would normally reveal the address, occupation as well as details of other family members such as a spouse or children, plus anyone else staying with them. "Meaningful" census returns can be searched between 1841-1911. Where we are able to provide a copy, this is on a donation basis, and is £3.75 a sheet to cover our expenses. We can either send you an electronic copy or a hard copy. Normally one sheet should cover the same family, but if a family continues on to a second sheet, we will include this as well.
If you want a print out of your family tree, or any part of it, we can print it out in a variety of different formats onto either A4, or A3 size paper. This is available either as a .PDF file, or a hard copy.
If you want an up to date external photograph of a church, monument, headstone, or any place of interest etc., we can supply professionally taken photographs for a flat fee of £22.50. At present we are only able to offer this exceptional price within an area that approximately corresponds with zones 1-6 on the London Transport system. Click here for the actual area covered. We will attempt to complete all orders within 14 days, and will send you a high quality .jpg file for you to print out.
Just ask for anything we haven't covered. Use the contact tab above.
